Preview: Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters - Ray Charles

12 hours 53 min ago
Artist: Ray Charles
Title: Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters
Release Date: October 26, 2010
Label: Concord
Format(s): CD, DD

Concord Records, who is handling the majority of Ray Charles' catalog, is releasing ten previously unheard tracks as part of the singer's 80th birthday celebration.  Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters collects rarities from over four decades and covers a variety of music genres.

The tracks include some interesting material, including a take on the Burl Ives' hit A Little Bitty Tear and a newly unearthed duet with Johnny Cash on the Kris Kristofferson song Why Me? (here titled Why Me, Lord?).

From the Concord Records press release:
Culled from four decades worth of demos and other previously unreleased material, Rare Genius showcases the remarkable artistic vision, stylistic range and emotionally rich vocals that crafted Charles enduring legacy.

Listening to the ten gems from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s that comprise this CD, fans will have no trouble envisioning the late singer rocking back and forth at the piano as he effortlessly segues between R&B/soul, pop, country and gospel. “Ray would always get inside the meaning of a lyric and make the listener believe every word,” says Concord Music Group Chief Creative Officer. John Burk. “His vocals carried incredible emotion and intensity, even on demo tapes. What we have here with Rare Genius is on par with some of his greatest works.”

And that’s crystal clear right from the album’s sparkling opener, “Love’s Gonna Bite You Back.” The March 1980 session track features an upbeat horn arrangement behind what Rare Genius liner notes author Bill Dahl calls “a Charles vocal that’s a signature mixture of sandpaper grit and heavenly goodness.” Up next is the stunning ballad “It Hurts to Be in Love,” which underscores the album’s main thematic focus and one of Charles’ favorite subjects: the ups and down of romance.

Another compelling standout is the gospel-stirred Charles and Cash duet on Kris Kristofferson’s “Why Me, Lord?” Discovered in the Sony vaults, the song was produced by Billy Sherrill in Nashville and recorded in 1981 for an anticipated release on a CBS album. For unknown reasons, that didn’t come to pass. What’s more important, however, is the emotional charge you get listening to these two powerful voices come together in this spirited and inspired pairing.

Except for “Lord,” the nine other Rare Genius tracks including the soul-drenched “I Don’t Want No One But You,” a blues-infused cover of songwriter Hank Cochran’s country classic “A Little Bitty Tear” and the joyous “I’m Gonna Keep on Singin’” were found in the vault at Charles’ R.P.M. International studios in Los Angeles. Adding a little sweetening to some of the sparse, stripped-down tracks was a team of top-notch musicians and artists: guitarists Keb’ Mo’ and George Doering, organist Bobby Sparks, trumpeter Gray Grant, trombonist Alan Kaplan, bassists Trey Henry and Chuck Berghofer, drummers Gregg Field and Ray Brinker and background vocalist Eric Benet.Track List:
  • Love’s Gonna Bite You Back
  • It Hurts To Be in Love
  • Wheel of Fortune
  • I’m Gonna Keep on Singin’
  • There’ll Be Some Changes Made
  • Isn’t It Wonderful
  • I Don’t Want No One But You
  • A Little Bitty Tear
  • She’s Gone
  • Why Me, Lord? featuring Johnny Cash

Preview: Six Feet Down Under EP - Metallica

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 15:50
Artist: Metallica
Title: Six Feet Down Under EP
Release Date: September 20, 2010
Label: N/A
Format(s): CD (Australia Only), DD (Metallica.com)

Metallica will release an eight song EP on September 20 to celebrate their return to Australia.  The Six Feet Under EP contains live performances from their previous tours of the continent dating back to 1989.  From their website:
"We're getting psyched up for our return to Australia and New Zealand next week . . . It's been six long years since we've visited and we're ready to throw down! The nice people at Universal Music were so darn excited that they actually suggested that we release something special to commemorate this last run of World Magnetic tour dates, so . . . ta-da . . . we present the 'Six Feet Down Under' limited-edition EP! Coming to Trans-Tasman record stores and right here at the Metallica.com store on September 20.

"Here's the story . . . The collective brain trust came up with what we thought might be a kinda fun idea . . . how about some live recordings from each time we have been lucky enough to visit the area? It was all well and good until we realized that we did not start making multi-track recordings of every show until 2004 . . . oops! But you guys, the fans, came to our rescue with some pretty decent bootleg options and we trimmed those down to two songs from each tour in 1989, 1993, 1998, and 2004. In digging a little deeper, it occurred to us that we had tracks that had never before been released as 'live b-sides' (we're not counting the bonus songs on iTunes, okay?) and that that added to the adventure of pulling it all together.

"Be gentle with us . . . a few of these songs are, well, we'll say 'rough,' which may be an understatement!! They do, however, capture the live moments and hopefully you'll have as much fun listening as we did playing on those nights."Track List:
  • Eye of the Beholder (May 4, 1989 at Festival Hall in Melbourne)
  • ...And Justice For All (May 4, 1989 at Festival Hall in Melbourne)
  • Through the Never (April 8, 1993 at the Entertainment Centre in Perth)
  • The Unforgiven (April 4, 1993 at the National Tennis Centre in Melbourne)
  • Low Man's Lyric (Acoustic) (April 11, 1998 at the Entertainment Centre in Perth)
  • Devil's Dance (April 12, 1998 at the Entertainment Centre in Perth)
  • Frantic (January 21, 2004 at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney)
  • Fight Fire With Fire (January 19, 2004 at the Entertainment Centre in Brisbane)

Bobby Womack to Tour U.K. & Ireland with the Gorillaz

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 06:26
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bobby Womack is set to join the Gorillaz' U.K. and Ireland tour from November 11 to 18.  Womack sang on the first single from the group's latest album, Escape to Plastic Beach.

The Gorillaz were originally formed as a "virtual" hip-hop group that were represented by the cartoons and visuals of Jamie Hewlett.  Their first album and its successful single Clint Eastwood were the combined efforts of Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, Damon Albarn (Blur), Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), and Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz (both Tom Tom Club).  Over a decade and two more albums, the contributing musicians have changed with Albarn and Hewlett being the common factors.

Albarn has done his best to include many of his collaborators on this tour, including Womack, Mark E. Smith (the Fall), De La Soul, the Hypnotic Brass, Kano, Bashy, Little Dragon and more.

The dates for the U.K. leg of the Escape the Plastic Beach tour:
  • 11/11 - Dublin - O2 Arena
  • 11/12 - Manchester - Manchester Arena
  • 11/14 - London - O2 Arena
  • 11/15 - London - O2 Arena
  • 11/17 - Birmingham - NIA
  • 11/18 - Brighton - Brighton Centre
Here is Womack with the Gorillaz on their song Stylo from this year's Glastonbury festival.

Big Country Returns

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 05:10
80's Scottish rockers Big Country are set to return for a series of concerts in 2011.  Last together in 2007 for their twenty five live tour, the band has reunited with original members Tony Butler (bass/vocals), Mark Brzezicki (drums/vocals) and Bruce Watson (guitar/vocals) along with Mike Peters of the Alarm (vocals/guitars) and Jamie Watson (guitar).

Now approaching their 30th anniversary, the band is looking to celebrate their past and honor the life and times of their original lead singer, Stuart Adamson, who passed away in 2001.  Their catalog includes the international hit In a Big Country (1983/Pop #17/Mainstream Rock #3/U.K. #17) along with Fields of Fire (400 Miles) (1983/U.K. #10), Chance (1983/U.K. #9), Wonderland (1984/U.K. #8) and Look Away (1986/Mainstream Rock #5/U.K. #7).

Tony Butler commented "To play again as Big Country was something that was only going to happen if we could find someone who could compliment the band and sing the songs in the way they need to be sung, with heart and soul. Mike Peters from The Alarm has stepped in to fill the premise. It's about time the songs got another airing, and we think Stuart would be pleased too."

Peters talked a bit about his history with the band when he said "I first met Stuart on stage at a U2 concert in Hammersmith Palais back in 1983. Bono introduced us to his audience as being "part of the the new breed" and Stuart was literally passed up onto the stage by the fans and I shook his hand as I handed him a guitar - an unforgettable entrance. The last time I saw him was also on stage with Big Country at Glasgow Barrowlands for the last night of the Final Fling tour in 2000, when we sang Neil Young's Rockin' In The Freeworld together. When Bruce Watson called and asked me to sing for Big Country, it was something I didn't need to think twice about. I'm looking forward to meeting all the fans again and playing a part in keeping the spirit of Stuart Adamson alive and celebrating the music of a band I have loved from near and afar for the whole of my adult life".

The first five announced dates (more may be added):
  • 01/05 - Newcastle - O2 Academy
  • 01/06 - London - Islington O2 Academy
  • 01/07 - Birmingham - O2 Academy
  • 01/08 - Liverpool - O2 Academy

Rhino Cutting Staff Again

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 03:51
It was almost a year ago (September 24, 2009) that we reported on the impending layoff of 30 to 40 people at Rhino Records and asked if this was the beginning of the end for the label as we know it.

So far, we haven't seen as many deep catalog titles and most major box sets have come out as limited editions through Rhino Handmade but, otherwise, its been pretty close to business-as-usual; however, a report surfaced yesterday that the company will again go through a cutback which could happen as soon as September 16.

Sources told Variety that the cuts would heavily affect the division responsible for physical product as the company further distances itself from CDs and focuses on digital and custom delivery.  Plans are in the works to start releasing more deep catalog products (a reported 2,000 titles) but only on the company's download site or as custom burned discs.

It is unknown how deep the cuts will be but Variety says it will be "a substantial number of the division's remaining 100 employees."

Lou Reed Crushes Susan Boyle

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 03:12
TMZ is reporting in an exclusive that Lou Reed has refused to let English singing phenomenon Susan Boyle sing his song Perfect Day on America's Got Talent

According to TMZ (with additional information from other sources), word got to the producers and Boyle just two hours prior to the airing with Susan and a chorus of 100 ready and rehearsed.  The action caused Boyle to break into tears and leave the show, heading to LAX to return to England.  That left America's Got Talent without a performance for the evening.

Word is that Reed was not a fan of Boyle who was discovered last year on the sister show, Britain's Got Talent.  An insider told Britain's Sun newspaper "She had flown to America to do this and was very excited. Her version of the song was perfect. You could tell she was upset. It's very disappointing for her."

Heart Has First Top Ten Album in Twenty Years, But Does That Really Make It a Big Seller?

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 00:00
Heart will debut at number 10 on the upcoming Billboard Albums chart with their new release Red Velvet Car.  It's the first time they've reached the top ten since 1990's Brigade

The bad news, though, is the ridiculously low sales figures being posted by most album releases in today's music world.  Their number ten debut came about on sales of only 27,000 copies.

Sales numbers aside and in comparison to other acts, a top ten still represents a strong interest in the group and a resurgence in Heart's audience, possibly the third of their career.  The group did well when they first hit the scene in 1976, scoring three top tens out of their first five releases.
  • Dreamboat Annie (1976/#7)
  • Little Queen (1977/#9)
  • Magazine (1978/#17)
  • Dog & Butterfly (1979/#17)
  • Bebe Le Strange (1980/#5)
Heart then hit a five year period where their popularity dropped quite a bit with the albums Private Audition (1982/#25) and Passionworks (1983/#39).  It was 1985's album Heart that brought the Wilson's their second wave of success as they ventured into the realm of big AOR ballads like Alone, Never and What About Love?
  • Heart (1985/#1)
  • Bad Animals (1987/#2)
  • Brigade (1990/#3)
Once again, their popularity dipped but, this time, the slump lasted for twenty years.  To be fair, they only released two studio albums during that time (Desire Walks On (1993/#48) and Jupiter's Darling (2004/#94)) along with their acoustic reworking of some of their classic songs (The Road Home (1995/#87)).

Now we come to Red Velvet Car and its top ten start.  If the Wilson's can do as well with future albums, it very well could be their third career peak.

Unfortunately, without some major uptick in sales like a single that receives across-the-board airplay (Top 40, Rock, Adult Alternative), it is unlikely that the Wilson sisters will be able to sell enough of the album to even receive a gold record (500,000 units sold).  That would put Red Velvet Car well down on the list of Heart hits, no matter how high it charted against the competition of the day.

Top Selling Heart Albums (based on RIAA awards):
  • 5,000,000 to 6,000,000 (5x Platinum)
    • Heart
  • 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 (3x Platinum)
    • Little Queen
    • Bad Animals
  • 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 (2x Platinum)
    • Dog and Butterfly
    • Brigade
  • 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 (Platinum)
    • Dreamboat Annie
    • Magazine
  • 500,000 to 1,000,000 (Gold)
    • Bebe le Strange
    • Desire Walks On
  • Less Than 500,000
    • Private Audition
    • Passionworks
    • Jupiter's Darling
    • Red Velvet Car (Projected, Based on First Week Sales)

Everyone Who Placed Bets on Paul Weller for the Mercury Prize...You Lose

Wed, 09/08/2010 - 06:02
A short story to follow up on yesterday's report where Paul Weller's Wake Up the Nation took the betting lead for the Barclay's Mercury Prize for best British/Irish album of the year.  A lot of people lost money.

The Mercury Prize was awarded Tuesday night in London and it went to the self-titled debut album by the group the xx.  The group receives a $31,000 prize for the award.

All of the nominees, except for Dizzee Rascal, performed before the award was given.

John Lennon's Killer Denied Parole

Wed, 09/08/2010 - 05:43
Mark David Chapman, the man who gunned down John Lennon in 1980, was once again denied parole on his twenty-years to life sentence.

The parole board interviewed Chapman on Tuesday via teleconference with Attica Correction Facility where the killer is housed.  The interview had been scheduled for last month but was postponed for undisclosed reasons.

Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, had previously written to the board expressing concern for the safety of her family and for Chapman himself if he were to be released.

In their decision, the parole board said that they were concerned about "the disregard you displayed for the norms of our society and the sanctity of human life when, after careful planning, you traveled to New York for the sole purpose of killing John Lennon" and that "release remains inappropriate at this time and incompatible with the welfare of the community."

Paul McCartney & Merle Haggard Selected for the Kennedy Center Honors

Wed, 09/08/2010 - 03:58
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced today that this years Kennedy Center Honors will go to musicians Paul McCartney and Merle Haggard, TV host Oprah Winfrey, dancer, choreographer and director Bill T. Jones, and Broadway composer Jerry Herman.

Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein said of the honorees "The Kennedy Center celebrates five individuals who have spent their lives enriching, inspiring and elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world.  The honesty of Merle Haggard’s music and poetic lyrics has helped to shape the world of country music for nearly five decades. Jerry Herman’s musicals rank him in the pantheon of Broadway’s Golden Age and will keep audiences humming along for generations to come. The inventive style and imaginative artistry of Bill T. Jones has had an invaluable impact on the varied landscapes of dance and theater. Sir Paul McCartney is one of the most influential and successful songwriters and musicians of all time, whose work has continuously altered both the creation and perception of music all over the world. For more than 25 years, Oprah Winfrey has established one of the most innovative careers in the entertainment world, with distinctive accomplishments in television and film."

McCartney commented on what the honor means to him. "President Kennedy was such an icon for us in the sixties and his presidency was so inspiring for so many people that it is a great pleasure for this kid from Liverpool to receive this honor."

Haggard stayed low-key when he told the Associated Press "I don't know exactly what to do, I guess just sit there and look like you're having fun."

The Kennedy Center Honors medallions will be presented to the honorees on December 4 at a State Department dinner.  The next night, the honorees will be saluted from the stage of the Kennedy Center Opera House by stars from all genres of entertainment.  The gala will be taped and shown on CBS television December 28.

Leonard Cohen Closes Extended Tour With Four Additional North American Shows

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 23:05
Leonard Cohen brings his amazing worldwide concert tour to an end this December with four added North American shows.  All told, the 76-year-old singer/songwriter will have been on the road for two-years and seven-months, playing a total of 250 shows.  What's even more impressive is that these were not your standard hour-plus concerts.  Cohen was putting on Springsteen size three-hour performances at each of the venues.

The newly added dates:
  • 12/04 - Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu, Hawaii
  • 12/08 - Rose Quarter Theatre of the Clouds - Portland, Oregon
  • 12/10 - The Colosseum at Caesars Palace - Las Vegas, Nevada
  • 12/11 - The Colosseum at Caesars Palace - Las Vegas, Nevada
Cohen is currently on another European leg of the tour after having to postpone appearances earlier in the year due to a bad back.  The December shows will be his first North American appearances since last November.

As for the future, Leonard is looking to go back in the studio in 2011 to record his first album of new material since 2004's Dear Heather.  Even in his late seventies, the man continues to stay active in what is becoming one of the great comebacks of all-time.

...and We Thought Rerun Season Was Almost Over: Joe Perry Talks About Replacing Steven Tyler

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 21:58
We know that they've been semi-amicably playing together (except for some hip checks, mic stand mishaps and such) but what does Joe Perry really think of the future of Aerosmith and Steven Tyler?

Perry talked with the Calgary Herald prior to the group's appearance there on Friday.  Less than a week later, on September 16, they play Vancouver for the last show of their Cock, Locked, Ready to Rock Tour and the rest is up in the air.  Tyler is reportedly going off to judge on American Idol and Perry isn't waiting for him.
"(The whole group) sat down not too long ago, when we decided to do this tour, and we basically laid out plans for the next two years. And when you're sitting there talking about that and one of the band members knows full well he's signed a contract that's taking him out of the music business for up to seven months of the year, that kind of throws a wrench into things. It's all very well to say, 'I'm going to go off and do this and it won't interfere with the band' but there's only so many weeks in the month and so many months in the year.

"I'm not going to sit around for two years waiting for him to come back to Aerosmith. (You've got) four guys that are great together, and if you find the right singer, there's no reason you can't go and entertain people."So, get ready for round two of "Who Will Front Aerosmith?"  Perhaps they could trade audition notes with the members of Led Zeppelin.

Video: Peter Gabriel Talks About His Album Artwork

Mon, 09/06/2010 - 18:39
For over forty years, Peter Gabriel has been one of the most innovative and, at times, confounding artists in music.  From his use of world music instruments and styles to his introspective lyrics and fantastical stage personas, he has constantly challenged the listener and viewer.  That carried through, at times, to the artwork on his albums, something that Gabriel says is getting lost in the world of digital music.

One of Gabriel's latest projects is a new website where prints of his various album covers will be available.  In this video, he talks about the site and the background on the covers of his first four solo albums (all named Peter Gabriel) along with Shakin' the Tree.
